Wastewater sludges
The CELLRUPTOR® process has been introduced to the market for the pre-treatment of sludges arising from the aerobic biological treatment of municipal and industrial wastewaters. These sludges often form the feedstock for high solids anaerobic digestion, yielding valuable biogas as a renewable energy source.
Ideally, the CELLRUPTOR® process is sized and designed according to the volumetric flow rates of the feedstock material most suited to this form of pre-treatment. For wastewater treatment plants using the activated sludge process, this would be the Surplus Activated Sludge (SAS), but where Primary and Secondary sludges are mixed, this can also form the feed to the Cellruptor® process.
Typical net benefits of CELLRUPTOR® pre-treatment:
|
Sludge |
Increase in Volatile Solids Destruction |
Increase in Biogas produced |
|
Secondary Sludge (SAS) |
Up to 40% |

The results for mixed Primary and Secondary sludges have been demonstrated in a CELLRUPTOR® unit processing 5t/h of thickened sludge (approximately 4% dry solids).
Other Feedstocks
Other feedstocks where the application of CELLRUPTOR® as a pre-treatment before anaerobic digestion can yield improved volatile solids destruction and increased biogas production rates include:
- food waste
- animal manures
- icroalgae
- agricultural crop residues
Depending on the nature of these feedstocks, biogas production rates may increase in the range 5-20%.
Eco-Solids International has the facility to test CELLRUPTOR® pre-treatment of specific materials with anaerobic digestion in bench scale feasibility trials.
